Why Is Place Value So Important?

Place value is one of the most important maths skills children learn in primary school. It helps them understand that the value of a digit depends on its position in a number.

For example:

• In 4,582, the 4 represents 4 thousands, the 5 represents 5 hundreds, the 8 represents 8 tens, and the 2 represents 2 ones.
• In 36, the 3 represents 3 tens (30), not just the number 3.
• Compare 245 and 425. They use the same digits, but the numbers have different values because the digits are in different places.

This understanding is the foundation for almost every area of mathematics.

In the NSW Stage 3 Mathematics Syllabus, students continue to build their place value knowledge by learning to read, write, compare and order large numbers. They also use place value to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems, and later apply these skills to decimals and percentages.

For example, a child who understands place value knows that:

• 398 + 5 is close to 400 + 3, making it easier to solve mentally.
• 3,450 is greater than 3,405 because 5 tens is greater than 0 tens.
• When rounding 6,782 to the nearest hundred, the tens digit helps determine whether the number rounds to 6,800 or 6,700.

When children have a strong understanding of place value, they are more confident solving problems and are less likely to rely on memorising procedures. Instead, they learn to recognise patterns, estimate answers and choose efficient strategies.

You can support your child at home with simple questions such as:

• What does the 7 represent in 7,314?
• Which number is larger: 5,609 or 5,690? How do you know?
• Can you make the largest number using the digits 2, 5, 8 and 9?
• What happens to the value of a digit if it moves one place to the left?

These short conversations help develop mathematical thinking and build confidence.
